STEMPower Mentorship Program: A Unique Leadership Opportunity for Manufacturing Employers in Massachusetts

By: Amy Mosher, Lead STEM Coach, Central MA

Employers across industry lines are looking to set themselves apart from their competitors and market their distinct value proposition in order to survive and, hopefully, thrive, despite changing and turbulent economic times.

While economic indicators are improving slightly, U.S. manufacturing has been especially challenged due to outsourcing and automation trends.  Knowing that today’s average worker is ‘wearing many hats’ and ‘stretched thin’, it can be difficult for employers to see how they might acquire a new marketing edge, when most businesses are focused on day-to-day operational needs.

STEMPower offers a unique opportunity through its growing Mentorship Program for your company to distinguish itself as an industry leader.

The STEMPower program, a 3-Year Department of Labor (DOL) initiative connecting job seekers and employers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, is based out of the One-Stop Career Centers in Central MA, North Central MA, and Franklin-Hampshire County.

One of only five similar programs in the country, STEMPower focuses on important and emerging ‘Advanced Manufacturing’ sectors such as Biotechnology, Renewable Energy/ Green Technologies, and Aerospace, among others, throughout Mid-MA.
STEMPower is currently recruiting mentors to work with one or more protégés for 1 year.  The STEMPower Mentorship Program allows mentors the opportunity to give back to their industry by helping a STEM participant transitioning to a new career field.
The primary function of our mentors is to build a strong mentor relationship with STEMPower participants through listening, guidance, advice, teaching, and professional support.

Mentors are vital to the STEM Pathways program and serve as advisors, educators, role models and leaders contributing knowledge and skills through the sharing of their experiences with others.

Mentors provide professional insight, coaching, and direction for protégés looking to obtain work and/ or increase their value in a manufacturing-based field.
STEMPower also offers STEM-related businesses the following benefits:

  1. Access to a high quality labor pool
  2. Direct input to industry-specific training programs
  3. Business development support, including free online advertising
  4. Networking and PR opportunities

Companies are welcome to learn more about STEMPower and the Mentorship Program by visiting  www.stempower.org or contacting STEMPower Project Director Lisa Derby Oden at 508-751-7575, who can put you  in touch with the Lead STEM Coach in your area.

This program is sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. This Program (or activity) is an equal opportunity employer/program and auxiliary aids and services are available upon request.
