Clean Energy Lab Goes Solar

The Clean Energy Lab (CEL) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has acquired a solar simulator to provide development support to companies commercializing solar voltaic technologies.

“CEL has gotten great interest from a wide range of clean energy companies that need development help and we have projects on going with wind, wave, tidal, and even biofuel, but the one segment we have not been able to help was solar.  This capability will make CEL that much more valuable to the clean energy industry,” said Bernie Nolan, CEL Manager.

CEL (http://www.atmc.umassd.edu/laboratories/cel/welcome.cfm), funded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s Renewable Energy Trust, provides the development environment for startups so that they do not have to invest in expensive capital equipment.  With metering, instrumentation, electrical loads, a grid interface and an experienced staff, CEL is intended to accelerate clean energy development in the state.

“The Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC), is all about providing low cost support for startups,” noted John Miller, ATMC Director of Operation. “We are the only incubator in the state that has the infrastructure on site to build, integrate and test hardware.  This is a tremendous accelerator for development and the simulator gives the ATMC the ability to work with solar companies.”

The ATMC (www.atmc.umassd.edu), located in Fall River, is an economic development outreach of the University of Massachusetts.  It combines a startup incubator with mechanical and electrical prototyping, wet labs, access to UMass technology and faculty, and an industry experienced engineering staff.  Additionally, incubator companies can take advantage of a very active intern program that provides high quality, low cost labor.  The ATMC labs, including CEL, and technical assistance are also available to provide project support for companies not located at the ATMC.  For more information on CEL, please contact Bernie Nolan, [email protected], 508.910.9802.
