BAE Systems’ Lean Green and Energy Program at 7th Annual Governor’s Advanced Manufacturing & High Tech Summit
BAE Systems, a leading global defense, security, and aerospace company, presented a workshop on Lean Green and Energy during the 7th Annual Governor’s Advance Manufacturing and High Technology Summit on October 13th in Concord, Massachusetts. The workshop was a collaborative effort, involving the New Hampshire Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NH MEP), the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP), consulting and engineering firm GDS Associates, and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES).
"We are thrilled to share with other businesses how this project helped save our company $40,000 a year in energy costs in one facility," said Jay Fallon, manager of continuous improvement at BAE Systems. "It’s easy to implement for companies of all sizes, even for companies who haven’t used Lean methodologies before."
The workshop demonstrated how Lean tools, such as Value Stream Maps, which map out the current state of work flow and identify areas of improvement; the A3 problem-solving approach; Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) programs; and the Seven Waste list can be used to save energy. Dave Hess from NH MEP, Charles Lincicum of MassMEP, Richard Beard from GDS Associates, Paul Lockwood from NHDES and the team at BAE Systems developed a Sustainment Plan which consists of training material for Lean & Energy Kaizen, an Energy Maturity Assessment (EMA) plan, A3 plans, metrics for KW usage, and standard forms for Lean & Energy Kaizen.
"Based on $40,000 of identified energy savings in our pilot facility, we project more than $2 million of energy savings opportunities exist within BAE’s footprint," added Fallon.
"Partially funded with a grant from the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection, NH MEP was able to launch this new Lean Green and Energy program," said Zenagui Brahim, director of operations of NH MEP. "We are thankful for that funding and look forward to continue helping New Hampshire manufacturers reduce their energy costs and the impact on the environment."
