Job Opening: Mechanical Design Engineer, Watertown, MA

Position
Perkins Products / Howe Press is a leading manufacturer and distributor of products for the blind and visually impaired. Our Perkins Brailler, a mechanical braille writing device has been the leading selling product for the blind since its initial introduction in 1951. Perkins Products is part of Perkins School for the Blind, the first school for the blind chartered in the United States in 1829. For over 175 years, the staff at Perkins have been providing quality services to students and clients who are blind, visually impaired, deafblind, and multi-impaired. 

The Mechanical Design Engineer performs mechanical design and analysis of complex parts, assemblies, and industrial and consumer products for the blind community as well as taking the lead role in designing new product that serve the needs of the blind and visually impaired.

Responsibilities
Serves as the primary technical lead in the design and development of new products aimed at serving the blind and visually impaired. Utilizes computer-based engineering analysis tools to design, improve, modify, and enhance current and new products. Provides limited manufacturing and process engineering support to improve product quality, reliability, reduce costs, and implement productivity improvements. Analyzes current and potential product specifications and performance requirements to determine designs which can be produced by existing manufacturing facilities and methods. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
BS in Mechanical Engineering. Five (5) years of related work experience and expertise in product design and manufacturing and experience with computer-based engineering analysis tools. Must have industrial and/or consumer products experience, solid communication skills, and the demonstrated ability to work creatively, both independently and as a project team member to generate unique solutions to engineering product and process problems.

Preference may be given to candidates having additional experience in plastics, casting, and hands-on machining as well as Inventor, PRO-E, or Solid Works 3D-CAD application experience.

Available Schedule
Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week.
