News: Foundation for a Successful Lean Implementation: A Lean Philosophy and Leadership Education Workshop

Text Box: ?Outstanding exercise with eye-opening results, expressed in plain English and easily understood.? Leonard M. Perrault Vice President, Manufacturing National Vinyl Products, Inc. On September 14, 2006, the first of a planned series of events entitled “Foundation for a Successful Lean Implementation” was held at the Doubletree Hotel in Westborough, MA, to a standing-room only crowd. The Foundation’s workshop is a program designed and presented jointly by the Associated Industries of Massachusetts (A.I.M.) Manufacturing Institute and the Massachusetts Manufacturers Extension Partnership (MassMEP). The purpose of the workshop is to provide a look at the education and training programs, teaching styles, and trainers provided by the A.I.M. Manufacturing Institute and MassMEP.

Our next workshop is December 7, 2023 at MassMutual Conference Center, Springfield, MA. Please register early as seating is limited and the September 14th workshop filled up quickly.

The Foundation’s workshop is comprised of three main topics:

  1. A brief overview of Workforce Training Grants
  2. A sample exercise from A.I.M.’s Leadership education series
  3. An abridged version of MassMEP’s Time Wise Lean 101 training program

Implementing the Lean philosophy in any organization will create a significant change from the way the organization currently conducts its business. Every person in the organization is affected by those changes and, therefore, every person in the organization needs to be educated in the philosophy.

Managers and supervisors must improve their leadership skills, which include but are not limited to communication, problem solving, and team building. Every member of the organization must also be educated in the principles of Lean and how implementing its techniques will improve efficiencies, productivity, and delivery to customers. Lean is a journey in continuous improvement. Continuous improvement is not just a buzzword but a business strategy aimed at continually improving leadership and technical skills which will ultimately increase sales and profitability. An effective continuous improvement strategy enables the business to sustain the momentum gained by the Lean implementation.

The Workforce Training Fund is designed to provide financial support to Massachusetts companies that offer education and training initiatives to their employees. The Workforce Training Fund is so important to the process that we put it first in our program. The training programs selected by A.I.M and MassMEP are performance- based training programs and require every person to be engaged and to participate at a high level.

The “Foundation for a Successful Lean Implementation” events are intended for the decision makers in the organization. Plant and Operations managers, CFO, President and CEO, and owners are some of the positions that were represented at the Westborough event. Each participant was asked to fill out a program evaluation form; the feedback from the first program ranged from Very Good to Excellent.
